When you join forces
with others, your contribution has more impact. Your United
Way investment, because it is magnified by the investment of
others, has the power to bring about changes that matter in
our community. When you contribute, you help more than one person
or one charity. United Way is the collective power of people
working towards long-term solutions, not short-term fixes.
The United Way's Community Impact Agenda helps focus the efforts of our community. The agenda has been set by a diverse group of people and organizations who are dedicated to making a difference in peoples' lives. The work of volunteers and the energy and resources of the community are targeted in areas where they can have the greatest results.
We don't measure progress by how much money we raise or distribute. We look at our overall impact in the specific areas we've targeted and the lives and communities we've improved.
- More than 3,700 needy St. Lucie County students received
free book packs filled with school supplies they will need
to help them be successful at school.
- 31 local children were able to attend Camp Heartland, a summer camp dedicated to children whose lives have been impacted by HIV and AIDS.
- Nearly 500,000 meals were provided to hungry residents in St. Lucie County.
- More than 4,000 families received emergency (non-hurricane related) assistance through Mustard Seed Ministries.
- More than 120 victims of domestic violence and their children received safe shelter, medical attention, rest, food and clothing, emotional support, counseling and legal advocacy through SafeSpace.
- 189 individuals with varying ranges of mental and physical challenges were provided with educational, vocational, recreation and residential services to enable them to remain active and independent.
United Way helps bring communities together to take a look at the most urgent needs and do whatever it takes to improve lives. If it requires fundraising, speaking out, or just getting people to work together, that's what we do. We look at root causes. It's not enough to feed a hungry family, we look to change the conditions that led to their hunger in the first place.
The most important resource we have is people - those whom we serve and all of us who work, who invest, and who care about making long-term change in community conditions. We work with business, government, the media, non-profits - because it takes a whole community to get the kinds of results we need.
"Never underestimate the power of a few committed people to change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has" - Margaret Mead.
Your contribution is invested carefully and systematically in programs that work. We have a great responsibility to make sure your contribution is invested in the most effective way possible.
