Back to School Supply Drive

ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FL - Many students in St. Lucie County lack the resources that are needed to purchase school supplies. It can sometimes translate to a lack of performance in the classroom, which eventually reflects poorly on their report cards. United Way of St. Lucie County hosted a Back to School event to prevent students from attending school without supplies this year. Public school teachers from St. Lucie County had the opportunity to receive free school supplies to distribute to the less fortunate students.

The volunteers prepared nearly 1200 backpacks filled with pencils, notebooks, binders, folders, crayons, and much more. This event took place on August 6th and 8th from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. as volunteers loaded the teachers’ cars with the supplies at the curbside pickup location. There were nearly 50 volunteers, including Board of County Commissioners Linda Bartz and Sean Mitchell, and St. Lucie County Property Appraiser Michelle Franklin.

“Tools for Schools not only helps the teachers but it trickles down to our children. We have a lot of children who are in need right now. It is a pleasure to be able to help them,” said Bartz.

The school supplies were donations from Publix Super Markets and members of the community who contributed to the virtual school supply drive event in June. United Way also utilizes these supplies for the Tools for School St. Lucie Program. Tools for Schools is a free teacher resource store where teachers can come and shop for the supplies needed by students in their classrooms. Great way to impact the students directly!
